Upside Down Triangle

An Upside-Down Organization

Alcoholics Anonymous has been called an upside-down organization because, as the structure chart shows, the groups are on top and the trustees at the bottom. Bill W. wrote in Concept I: “The A.A. groups today hold ultimate responsibility and final authority for our world services….” Then, in Concept II, Bill made it clear that the groups “delegated to the Conference complete authority for the active maintenance of our world services and thereby made the Conference… the actual voice and effective conscience for our whole Society.”

District 27 info

District 27 is a moderate sized district at the southernmost tip of Texas, where the land meets the sea and a mighty river marks the border. The district's eastern boundary is defined by the Gulf of America, while the Rio Grande River and Mexico, form its southern edge. From there, it stretches west to Weslaco, sweeps north to include San Perlita, Port Mansfield,  and Raymondville before arcing back south to complete the loop at Brownsville and South Padre Island.

Southwest texas area 68

The Southwest Texas Area, extending from Del Rio and Ozona on the west, to Wharton and Giddings on the east, from Coleman and Brownwood on the north, and from Brownsville on the south, does, and will continue to function as a service body, always protecting and respecting the autonomy and the privilege of dissent of any AA group in the Area.
The Area Assembly will always be mindful of the ideals expressed in the Twelve Traditions, the Twelve Concepts, and the A.A. Service Manual, and try to be the voice and group conscience of the Area.
Service to the Area Districts and Area Groups is its primary purpose. Every attempt will be made to encourage all area groups to participate and support the Area Assembly, the General Service Office, and AA World Services.
It shall be the responsibility of the Area Assembly to elect an Area Delegate to the General Service Conference, and an Alternate Area Delegate, and the required Area Assembly Officers, and to give financial support to the Area Delegate as required to perform the duties of the office.

General Service Representative

When you’re a general service  representative (GSR) You are linking your home group with the whole of A.A. In 1950, a new type of trusted servant,  “group representative,” was suggested to help in the selection of delegates to the newly formed General Service Conference. By 1953, the job of  group representative was also seen as a good means of exchanging up-to-date information between in dividual groups and “Headquarters” (now the General Service Office). That’s still an important side of your work. But now, as general service representative, you have an even bigger responsibility: You transmit ideas and opinions, as well as facts; through you, the group conscience becomes a part of “the collective conscience of our whole Fellowship,” as expressed in the General Service Conference. Like everything else in A.A., it works through a series of simple steps. (For the complete picture in detail, read The A.A. Service Manual.)
